Joanna Yu is a Toronto-based Set and Costume Designer working in Theatre, Film, and Dance. She has designed for The Stratford Festival, Young People’s Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times, Why Not Theatre, Neptune Theatre, The Grand, The Blyth Festival, Factory Theatre, Acting UpStage, Obsidian Theatre, The Theatre Centre, Nightwood Theatre, Cahoots Theatre Projects, Theatre Passe Mauraille, fu-Gen, Theatre Front, Project:Humanity, Volcano Theatre, Carousel Players, Talk is Free Theatre,Tiger Princess Dance, NovaDance, BravoFACT!, Asli Films, Revolver Films, Spontaneously Combusted Films, the A.M.Y. Project, The Next Stage Festival, and Toronto Summerworks. She is also a guest artist/designer at Humber College, Sheridan College, George Brown College, Ryerson University, Randolf Academy for the Arts and guest lectures at York University. Joanna has been an Assistant Designer with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Soulpepper, Canadian Opera Company (2 seasons), and The Stratford Festival (4 seasons).
She has won the Brian Jackson award, the Tanya award (Stratford Festival), and was nominated for the Virginia and Myrtle Cooper award for Costume Design in 2013 and 2015. Joanna was recently nominated for her costume design for Nicolas Billon’s Butcher, which will be part of Mirvish Productions off-Mirvish 2017 season. Upcoming: collaborations with Signal Theatre’s production of Bearing presented by Luminato, as well as the Stratford Festival’s productions of The Komagata Maru Incident and The Breathing Hole.
