Joanna Yu is a Toronto-based Set and Costume Designer working in Theatre, Film, and Dance. She has designed for The Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, Young People’s Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Why Not Theatre, Neptune Theatre, The Grand, The Blyth Festival, Factory Theatre, Musical Stage Co., Obsidian Theatre, The Theatre Centre, Nightwood Theatre, Cahoots Theatre Projects, Theatre Passe Muraille, fu-Gen, Theatre Front, Project:Humanity, Volcano Theatre, Lemon Tree Creations, Carousel Players, Talk is Free Theatre,Tiger Princess Dance, NovaDance, Luminato, Mirvish, BravoFACT!, Asli Films, Revolver Films, Spontaneously Combusted Films, the A.M.Y. Project, The Next Stage Festival, and Toronto Summerworks. She is also a guest artist/designer at Humber College, Sheridan College, George Brown College, Ryerson University, Randolf Academy for the Arts and guest lectures at York University. Joanna has been an Assistant Designer with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Soulpepper, Canadian Opera Company (2 seasons), and The Stratford Festival (4 seasons).
Joanna is the recipient of the Pauline McGibbon award for Unique Talents and Potential for Excellence as well as the 2019 recipient of the Virginia and Myrtle Cooper award for Costume Design. Joanna is a member of Associated Designers of Canada.
